This painting was labour intensive. I did about 5 studies, all in the same size canvasses. But settle for this one first. But now I have the others as a starting point for more "lineups" ideas.

As the undercoat, a bright orange and golden gesso were put down to give the oils some nice glow.
I used everything from finger painting to smudge the raven's coat, to palette knives, brushes, scrapers and color shapers.
The orange background really looked too good to cover. The ravens were popping out with the orange. I might do that for another one.Here are two of the earlier stages :
